This internship is available through the UNC Career Center and is open to UNC-Chapel Hill students only!

Join the office team at Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge!  In addition to providing lifelong care for over 100 rescued farmed animals, the Refuge runs a robust education program and hosts many social and outreach events that educate about animal agriculture and veganism, including field trips, public tours, and cooking classes. Feedback from these events is critical, as we use it to communicate with granting bodies and financial donors, as well as to improve our programming. 

We are looking for interns to help us analyze and improve our feedback tools. In addition to helping us build a valuable lasting resource, interns will gain professional experience in humane education, including program design, facilitation, and assessment, as well as a basic knowledge of the public-facing functions of nonprofit sanctuaries, including communications and event planning. 

All majors and years may be considered. No professional experience with animals is required for this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Research existing survey methodologies in humane education.

  • Analyze data from our existing surveys, including youth field trips, public tours, camps, cooking classes, potlucks, and one-off events.

  • Work with our Education Director to generate a report of our existing data.

  • Recommend and design specific improvements for increasing participation rate, improving survey design, streamlining data collection and analysis for a small staff, and other items as needed.

  • Attend and observe select public outreach events, including a Tour and Explore event on Saturday, October 31, from 11-2 PM.

Qualifications:

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Be a UNC-Chapel Hill student.

  • Exhibit respect for our animal residents as individuals with inherent value.

  • Be willing to learn about the Refuge’s approach to farmed animal rescue and care.

  • Be enthusiastic to learn about humane education.

  • Have basic experience with at least one of the following: market research, data collection, and survey design & analysis.

  • Exhibit a respectful and professional attitude toward staff, volunteers, and visitors at the Refuge.

  • Exhibit attention to detail.

  • Be able to follow written and spoken instructions.

  • Be able to work both with a team and independently.

  • Be punctual and have efficient time management.

  • Have fluency in Microsoft Office Suite.


Additional Details:

  • The internship is 6 weeks long, from October 19 to December 22, for a total of 65 hours.

  • The position is hybrid, meaning that there are possibilities for at-home work. At least 30 onsite hours are required. 

  • Pay is $15/hour, through UNC. 

  • Interns must have reliable transportation to and from the Refuge.

  • Interns are expected to respect the Refuge being a vegan space by not bringing any animal products on site in the form of food (meat, dairy, eggs, honey, gelatin) or clothing (leather, wool, fur, silk).

  • While we encourage all qualified candidates to apply, we are particularly interested in applicants who have professional experience working with children and/or experience working in public outreach.

  • Interns should be comfortable around a variety of animals, including sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and cows.
