The Refuge is home to a friendly flock of chickens, turkeys, and a guineafowl. These individuals were rescued from factory farms, local shelters, and cruelty cases. Others of them were homeless before they came to live at the Refuge or were relinquished by individuals who could no longer care for them. April came to us after being found on the side of the road after falling off of a transport truck likely headed to the slaughterhouse.
Before coming to the Refuge, Scout found herself homeless and was wandering around an apartment complex in Greensboro, NC. With no safe housing or food, she was at risk from predators, cold weather, and starvation. Little Scout was even using the apartment building stairs as a makeshift "roost" to sleep on at night. Luckily, a kind woman who lived there recognized that Scout needed help, contacted our sanctuary, and drove her all the way to us.

Rooty is a striking rooster who came to us from Greensboro! He loves to roost, and he can be timid around humans.
This tiny rooster somehow found his way to an urban backyard in Raleigh NC where he was living for several months, sleeping high up in the trees at night. Although he showed an interest in the humans, he was too scared to come very close and would quickly run away when approached.
Rescued from a cruel cock-fighting ring in Michigan, Ernie will live out his days only knowing peace and love at the Refuge!
