This free workshop is for you!
“Seeing Through Presence” invites participants to explore how careful observation of animals can become a doorway to creativity, empathy, and new ways of seeing. This workshop emphasizes presence, curiosity, and connection as ways to help us see farm animals as the unique beings they are.
The session includes an art talk, a mini-tour, creative time with Refuge residents, and a closing reflection. All ages are welcome, and no prior artistic experience is required.

11:00 AM: Art Talk
Our 2026 Artist-in-Residence, Boots Quimby, will chronicle her residency at the Refuge and share some of her original pieces. Her talk will address her own creative process during the Residency, including how she spent her time with the animals, what aspects of particular residents drew her in to paint them, and the roles of curiosity, compassion, and presence in creativity.
11:30 AM: Guided Mini-Tour
Trained Tour Guides will introduce guests to individual residents by sharing their stories and unique personalities.
12:15 PM: Dedicated Creative Time with the Animals
Return to an animal resident you are drawn to, and work on a personal creative response in a medium of your choice. Creative responses might include, but are not limited to: sketching, painting, writing, photography, filmmaking, music, textile work, dance, and journaling. Whatever medium you choose, you will be encouraged to reflect on how time spent in the presence of the animal inspires you.
1 PM: Closing Reflection & Sharing
Boots will invite participants to reflect together on the experience of slowing down and being creative with the animals. Those who wish may also share the work they created or simply talk about their ideas and experiences.
You are welcome to bring your own materials (instruments, paper, pencils, etc.), but we will also be providing art supplies and instruments. This event is free, though space is limited, so make sure to reserve your spot using the links below!
